Недавно мне попалась старая потертая книга, пахнувшая затхлостью и древними тайнами — хотя, наверное, все книги, хранящиеся на дальних полках библиотек, пахнут именно так. Я собирала материал для своей статьи, как вдруг мое внимание привлекла небольшая потрепанная книжонка, выглядевшая белой вороной среди своих более новых соседей. Я аккуратно достала ее и с удивлением обнаружила, что книга была об одной из древнейших магий — магии вуду.
Сама тема была не нова для меня — одно время я изучала этот вопрос достаточно плотно, магия вуду всегда манила меня своими тайнами. Поэтому, если честно, я не думала найти что-то новое для себя, однако, с удобством устроившись в большом кожаном кресле в дальнем уголке библиотеки, я углубилась в чтение. Я пропустила историю происхождения магии, обряды и прочее, считая, что там я не найду ничего интересного, а вот глава со значимыми фигурами вуду меня заинтересовала. Эти люди были одними из самых влиятельных в свое время, они имели большой вес в обществе, помогая другим в достижении их целей.
Листая пожелтевшие от времени страницы, я встречала знакомые имена — доктор Джон, доктор Я Я, — известные колдуны культа вуду, обладавшие огромным влиянием в Новом Орлеане во времена рабов и колоний. И вдруг среди множества имен и фамилий мне попалось женское, которое я тоже слышала раньше, но оно почему-то не отложилось в моей памяти, — Мари Лаво.
Мари Лаво, так называемая «королева вуду», родилась в 1794 году в Новом Орлеане. Девушке не посчастливилось родиться белой, она была мулаткой, незаконно рожденной дочерью владельца огромной плантации. Однако, хоть она и не была ровней остальным детям отца, ее воспитывали в католической вере, чуждой для всех цветных.
В двадцать пять лет Мари вышла замуж за некоего Жака Пари, однако браку не суждено было стать счастливым — Жак бесследно исчез, а спустя много лет его признали мертвым. Чтобы как-то заработать себе на жизнь, Мари решила открыть парикмахерский салон, в надежде, что он будет приносить достаточно денег. Однако неожиданно салон стал для Лаво не источником денег, а источником информации. Девушка отличалась внимательностью и хитростью, она часами слушала своих клиенток, отделяя сплетни от по-настоящему ценных сведений. Не зря говорят: знание — сила. История умалчивает, каким образом она использовала полученную информацию, но дела Лаво быстро пошли в гору. И вот она уже обзавелась нужными знакомствами, а дальше решила, что одной парикмахерской ей мало, ей нужно больше… Больше информации — так родилась идея открыть публичный дом на берегу озера Поншартрен, что она вскоре и сделала. Все это дало ей огромное количество информации о жителях Нового Орлеана, которую Мари в дальнейшем научилась грамотно использовать для своей личной выгоды.
Общаясь не только с белыми, но и с чернокожими, девушка пристрастилась к магии вуду, которая широко практиковалась среди населения Нового Орлеана. Используя свою хитрость, а может, и колдовство (теперь это останется тайной за семью печатями), Мари сумела завоевать статус «королевы вуду», активно участвуя в сборищах за Французским кварталом, где вудуисты проводили свои церемонии.
К «королеве» потянулись люди с просьбами о помощи, которые каким-то чудесным образом уверовали в ее силу. Чаще всего к ней обращались с бытовыми вопросами, с любовными приворотами и прочими житейскими проблемами. Лаво делала кукол, которых наказывала подбрасывать на порог врагам, и те потом умирали… По- мимо этого, в то время были распространены мешочки «гри-гри», представляющие собой небольшой матерчатый сверток, наполненный различными ингредиентами — травами, костями, камнями, пылью с кладбища и прочим. Ингредиенты выбирались согласно назначению мешочка — приворот, удача в делах, защита от сглаза и прочего. Люди верили, что если спрятать мешочек с нужным составом в вещах неугодного человека, то он непременно погибнет. Особым спросом такие мешочки пользовались у рабов, которые пытались сжить со свету своих белых хозяев, часто относившихся к ним очень жестоко. Кстати, Мари Лаво стала настолько популярна, что к ней стали часто обращаться представители элиты Нового Орлеана и о ней даже начала писать пресса.
В 1830 году произошел случай, который наделал много шума в городе. К Мари обратился богатый горожанин, сын которого обвинялся в страшном убийстве. Молодого человека ждала виселица. Безутешный отец по-
обещал, что отдаст в собственность Мари свой особняк, если она спасет его сына от смерти. Королева подумала и согласилась. Утром в день слушания, она пришла в церковь, где оно должно было состояться, положила в рот три стручка перца, помолилась и аккуратно переложила все стручки под сиденья стульев, на которых должны были сидеть судьи. Результатом заседания стало оправдание молодого человека, а убийство было расценено как самооборона. После этого случая Мари была признана всемогущей, и ее власть в Новом Орлеане прочно укрепилась.
Но кажется, что не только в магических способностях Лаво было дело… Пожалуй, одним из главных секретов ее безграничной власти было решение открыть когда-то салон! Открыв собственную парикмахерскую, она не только обеспечила себя клиентами, но и получила доступ к информации обо всех жителях города. Богатые белые красавицы, аристократки, сидя в салоне в ожидании услуг, перемывали косточки соседям, смакуя местные сплетни, делились сердечными делами и прочим, разбалтывая порой самые сокровенные тайны друг друга. Мари же все это слушала и запоминала, ну а дальше просто использовала в своих делах — никакого колдовства, как мне кажется, простая психология и умение правильно обращаться с нужной информацией. Но и этого «королеве» показалось мало — она решила расширять свою агентурную сеть, расположив к себе чернокожих слуг своих клиентов. Это было проще простого, суеверия составляли большую часть жизни чернокожих рабов, которые верили буквально во все. Достаточно вспомнить «Приключения Тома Сойера», где наглядно показаны впечатлительные чернокожие слуги. Так вот Мари придумала хитрую уловку — она подбрасывала куколку вуду на порог дома, ну а потом промывала мозги слугам о возможном проклятии и прочем. Когда мнительные слуги пугались, то сразу же предлагала свои услуги, выменивая на них информацию о хозяевах этого дома. Тем самым женщина получила огромную сеть информаторов, которые охотно делились с ней всеми сплетнями и слухами о своих хозяевах. Вот так. Возможно, именно это все дало ей ту самую власть над людьми, и никакая магия тут ни причем.
Только спустя 39 лет, в 1869 году, Мари была вынуждена отказаться от титула «королевы вуду», передав свои полномочия дочери, и то, только потому, что она уже находилась в преклонном возрасте. Скончалась Лаво, по словам современников, тихо и мирно у себя в особняке, однако, по словам очевидцев, ее видели живой спустя какое-то время, около своего дома.
Сложно сказать, было ли что-то мистическое и волшебное в том, что она делала, и замешаны ли были в этом темные силы, к которым обращалась Мари. Можно верить и не верить в магию, однако эту женщину уж точно нельзя назвать заурядной личностью. В свое время она была одной из самых влиятельных персон в Новом Орлеане, и это несмотря на то, что была мулаткой. Говорят, что Мари Лаво до сих пор не упокоилась — ее часто видят на новоорлеанском кладбище Сент-Луис, прогуливающейся между могилами. Иногда рядом с ней видят огромную змею — символ Боа, одного из главных вудуистских божеств. Существует даже поверье, что Мари Лаво и после смерти исполняет желания людей. Для этого нужно нарисовать на стене ее усыпальницы крестик, встать возле могилы, трижды повернуться вокруг оси и три раза постучать в дверь склепа. Не знаю, конечно, вряд ли этот нехитрый ритуал поможет исполнить ваше желание, да и зачем бы Мари исполнять его — ведь магия вуду основана на принципе «я тебе, ты мне». Но попробовать стоит, чем черт (точнее, Папа Легбо — в магии вуду именно он отвечает за «тамошний ад») не шутит. На могиле Мари очень часто проводят ритуалы вуду, потомки старинного культа — да, магия вуду жива до сих пор и достаточно распространена — считают, что на ее могиле до сих пор можно черпать силу, когда-то принадлежащую Мари.
На этом я закрыла книгу и задумчиво положила ее на рядом стоящий столик. Верить или нет в чудеса Мари Лаво, решать только вам, однозначно могу сказать только одно: чтобы в те времена стать той, кем стала она, нужно было очень потрудиться. Цветных в то время не особо жаловали, она была воистину уникальной женщиной, необычайно сметливой и очень хитрой. Ну а что касается магии… Тут каждый решает для себя сам, что именно использовала Мари. Возможно, искусство управлять людьми — это тоже своеобразная магия, которой владеют немногие, а что касается вуду, то это один из способов достижения своих личных целей, впрочем, как и большинство подобных культов.
