Он без экивоков говорит, то, что думает, и его за это часто критикуют, но это никоим образом не мешает Олегу Тинькову быть одним из самых успешных бизнесменов на постсоветском пространстве.

Про таких людей, как Олег Тиньков, принято говорить «self-made man» — человек, сделавший себя сам. Его родители — (мама — швея, отец — шахтер), едва ли могли помочь ему достичь небывалых высот в предпринимательской деятельности. Тем не менее на сегодняшний день Тиньков является одним из богатейших людей страны. В российском рейтинге Forbes он занимает 169-е место (размер состояния — более 500 миллионов долларов), в общемировом — 1210-е. Неплохо для человека, которому на роду было написано добывать тоннами уголь из забоя в родном Ленинске-Кузнецком. Предпринимательская жилка проявила себя в Олеге еще в школе, когда, возвращаясь со сборов вместе с командой по шоссейным велогонкам, он привозил из Средней Азии дефицитные товары, которые затем продавал в Ленинске-Кузнецком. Во время учебы в Ленинградском горном институте возможностей для самореализации в качестве бизнесмена стало еще больше. Олег Тиньков и его друзья Олег Жеребцов (основатель сети гипермаркетов «Лента»), Олег Леонов (основатель сети супермаркетов «Дикси») и Андрей Рогачев (основатель «Пятерочки») торговали джинсами, косметикой, парфюмерией, икрой, водкой, японской бытовой техникой, компьютерами и даже газовыми баллончиками.
Поняв, что пребывание в Горном институте только мешает заниматься настоящим делом, Олег Тиньков уходит из учебного заведения с третьего курса, после чего начинается его карьерный взлет. Коммерсант импортирует технику из Юго-Восточной Азии. Создает первую в России сеть магазинов, специализирующихся на продаже бытовой техники и электроники, «Техношок». После того как конкуренция в этом сегменте рынка возросла, выгодно продает бизнес. В одно время с «Техношоком» Олег Тиньков занимался развитием сети музыкальных магазинов и собственного аудиолейбла «Шок Records». Раскручивая эти проекты, Олег проявил себя во всей своей необузданной красе: на открытии музыкальных магазинов у него выступали не кто-нибудь, а Алла Пугачева, Филипп Киркоров и Жанна Агузарова. А лейбл начал свою деятельность с записи альбомов таких коллективов, как «Ленинград» и «Кирпичи». Следующим направлением бизнеса Олега Тинькова стали пельмени и другие замороженные полуфабрикаты под брендом «Дарья» (так зовут дочь предпринимателя). Этот период биографии Олега Тинькова запомнился рекламными кампаниями на грани фола. Перепачканные мукой женские ягодицы с подписью: «Твои любимые пельмешки» еще не скоро сотрутся из памяти рекламщиков. На пике славы продовольственный бизнес вместе с брендом «Дарья» так же был выгодно продан. После пельмешек Олег Тиньков в прямом и переносном смысле с головой окунулся в пивоваренный и ресторанный бизнес. Количество ресторанов очень быстро достигло десяти, а два пивоваренных завода выпускали пенный напиток сразу под несколькими торговыми наименованиями. И снова с экрана зазвучали эксцентричные рекламные слоганы из серии: «Водка без пива — деньги на ветер». Для продвижения марки «Тинькофф» даже была выдумана история о предке пивовара — Порфирии Тинькове, поставлявшем пиво императорскому двору с 1759 года. По легенде, страницу с упоминанием о нем Олег Тиньков «нашел» в словаре Брокгауза и Евфрона. Подделка была представлена в Топонимическую комиссию Санкт-Петербурга с предложением увековечить род Тиньковых в названии улицы. Не заметившие подлога чиновники согласились, и 7 июля 2003 года в Пушкине появился Тиньков переулок. Но в 2005 году преуспевающий бизнес постигла судьба всех прежних проектов Тинькова: пивоваренные заводы были проданы за 200 миллионов долларов, а рестораны — за 15. Осенью того же года Олег Тиньков приобретает мало кому известный «Химмашбанк» и использует его в качестве плацдарма для совершения самой настоящей революции в банковском секторе. Не смотря на нежелание инвесторов вкладывать деньги в новый проект, «Тинькофф Кредитные Системы» за один только 2008 год показал 50-ти кратный рост прибыли. Инновационная схема работы стала залогом феноменальных экономических показателей кредитной организации. IPO «Тинькофф банка» стало одним из самых заметных событий в экономической жизни России в 2013 году.
Впрочем, не смотря на очевидный коммерческий успех, бизнесмен до сих пор не стал своим в банковской тусовке. Во всем виноват его не в меру острый язык. Кому захочется общаться с человеком, после того, как тот в очередном интервью назвал всех прочих владельцев банков чуть ли не мамонтами и предрек им массовое вымирание через пять лет? Впрочем, как показало время, Олег Тиньков погорячился: на российском рынке хватило места и его детищу, и традиционным кредитным организациям.
Красной нитью через весь жизненный путь Олега Тинькова проходит его любовь к велоспорту. Он спонсировал велоколлективы, создавал собственные команды. Вместе со своими велогонщиками участвовал в главных многодневках Старого Света.
